Supporting people in crisis since 1963
Lifeline’s story began in Sydney’s Sutherland region. In 1963, the late Reverand Dr Sir Alan Walker received a phone call from a man in deep distress. Sadly, that man later took his own life. Moved by this tragedy, Sir Walker set out to make sure no one else had to face their darkest moments alone. So he launched the world’s first 24-hour crisis support line.
What started as a local service has become one of Australia’s most trusted support networks. Today, 13 11 14 answers over a million calls each year from people in crisis.
Lifeline Sydney and Sutherland remains at the heart of that mission. We're still here – still listening, still helping. Our centre is home to a small team of 13 staff and more than 250 trained crisis supporters, backed by a community of volunteers who come together for local events.
We’re here to ensure no one faces a crisis alone. Whether it's over the phone, online, face to face or by text, our team is here to connect with people in whatever way they feel safest.
